Trump is now officially a convicted felon, but now that it’s all said and done, so what? He isn’t going to jail, doesn’t have to pay a fine, and his friends at the Supreme Court are one vote away from wiping the whole thing out on whatever technicality comes to mind. He’ll still be able to vote in Florida and hold federal office, though he won’t be able to own a firearm. The Secret Service will surround him for the rest of his life, so that shouldn’t matter.
One small requirement for felons convicted in New York is submitting a DNA sample. Now, that wouldn’t be a concern for most people unless you’re the sort of person who would sexually assault someone because you think you’re a star and can get away with it. Oh, wait! Trump is just that sort of guy and had been proven liable once for the sexual assault of E. Jean Carroll. Does that seem like the kind of act someone would commit just once?
Let’s suppose there’s a rape kit somewhere that provided DNA to the system awaiting a match, and Trump’s name turns up. Trump has been accused in the past of sexual assault and unwanted, improper touching. Since the 1970s, dozens of women have come forward only to be criticized and defamed by Trump. Suppose just one has DNA evidence from the type of assault E. Jean Carroll has proven in court and now has a DNA match to back it up?
The Supreme Court has already established that presidents are immune from prosecution for “official acts.” The Justice Department has a policy against prosecuting a sitting president, and Most States have been willing to delay the trial of a sitting president. Would Trump avoid prosecution for four additional years? Where would justice be for the woman who was the victim of a crime? Will Fox News put on several Trump surrogates claiming rape is an official act?
I don’t know what would happen in this instance. A better man than Trump would resign in shame and face some consequences. What are the odds that would happen?
